Is it okay for a man to wear a t shirt under a polo shirt or is that sloppy?
If the polo shirt is navy blue, is a white t-shirt or a darker coloured t shirt better?
The T-shirt or common undershirt is worn to collect small amounts of sweat, then pull it between the clothing layers, where it can often dry without leaving big fat sweat marks.
This is the purpose of the undershirt, to help keep you cleaner and dryer. Would you rather be all pitted? THAT is sloppy.
When dealing with layered clothing, the inner layers are always supposed to be lighter than the outer layers. It is permissible to wear a light coat over dark clothing, if the coat is for environmental protection (rain, snow, etc.)
Ever see a man in a navy blue suit and a black shirt? No, of course not. How about a light grey suit with a navy blue shirt? Again, no way.
The only reason I can see why you would have taken issue with the clothing in question is if it was very rumpled or wrinkled, or if the undershirt hung out beneath the polo. Undershirts should always be tucked (for men). The shirt on top may be worn out or tucked in at the option of the wearer, unless he wears no belt, then the top shirt should stay out, provided it fits properly.
