If there is anything a woman knows absolutely, it is her bra size. At least she thinks she knows it. The sad truth is between 70 and 80 percent of all women wear the wrong bra size. Most of us have heard of this by now, but why exactly do we have the wrong size? This article is devoted to answering that very question.
The bra industry is a disaster. That may seem an odd thing to say, but it is absolutely the truth. I am not talking so much about the quality of the bras, but the uniform measurements used in the industry. Simply put, there are none! Bra brands in Europe use different measurements than those found in the United States. To make matters even worse, the sizes vary from brand to brand. A 34C at Goddess is not necessarily a 34C at Le Mystere.
Oprah Winfrey deserves the gratitude of women everywhere. She did an entire show on the fact that most women were wearing the wrong size bra. Not only did she point out the discrepancies mentioned above, but she also noted most women were actually fitting themselves incorrectly. With her huge following, the world of bras would never be the same.
So, what is the number one mistake we make when sizing ourselves? There is no single dominant mistake because we actually make two of them. The vast majority of us will choose a band size that is too large and cup sizes that are too small. Let’s take a look at each.
The design of a bra is such that the support should come from the bottom up. This means the band should be carrying the weight of your breasts. For this to occur, the band needs to be firm around your chest ribs and back. Far too many of us go with looser fitting bands than we should. Try to pop down one size and see how it feels. You should be able to stick a finger under the band, but that is about it.
When it comes to your cup size, “thou shall not spill over.” Each cup should encase the girls, but they girls should not overflow over the edges. If they do, the cup size is too small. Try to go up one cup size and see how it feels. So long as there are no gaps between the girls and the cups, the size is not too large. Importantly, don’t mistake the wrong style for the wrong size. Breast come in different shapes, so make sure you are matching the right style to yours.
Oprah did us a great service by doing a show on bras. By now you should know that statistically you are probably wearing the wrong size bra. Try to change it up. Consider getting a professional fitting. The comfort level of a bra that fits well compared to one that doesn’t is staggering.
