The 80 10 10 diet (often written as 80/10/10 diet) by Dr. Douglas Graham is a book which advocates a particular way of eating. Let me warn you that while this book is rather popular, it doesn’t appeal to everyone as it does prescribe a rather strict way of eating.
The basis principle of the 80 10 10 diet is that you need to get 80% of your calories from carbs (mainly from fresh fruit), 10% from protein, and 10% from fat. Your entire nutrition is based on raw food as Dr. Graham is a practicing raw food eater.
As you get most of your calories from fruit, you need to eat large quantities of it. Specifically, the book prescribes eating meals which are made up of a single fruit in large portions. In addition, you’re required to eat a lot of green, leafy vegetables.
As you can see, this is a unique eating plan which requires a lot of adjustment to what we’re used to eating. In his book, Dr. Graham discusses why he believes this is the right way to eat and backs it up with a lot of scientific research. This makes this an interesting book to read for any health conscious person whether they plan on trying the 80 10 10 diet or not.
Apart from the nutrition aspect of the diet, which is the main part, the book deals with the importance of regular exercise and lifestyle issues such as sleep, stress, emotional balance, and so on.
Following this diet isn’t easy. It is a major shift from the eating routine of most people. However, as this book enjoys overall rave reviews, it is worth reading even if you only adopt parts of it and not the entire scope of the book.
