Ralph Marlin is the name that is associated with the popular maker of neckwear, Ralph Marlin and Company; however Ralph Marlin was never actually a necktie designer. The story behind the company is as unique as the ties themselves. The fictional story begins with just who this man is.
The Tale of Ralph Marlin
Ralph Marlin was a fisherman who lived in a small village in Mexico. He was very successful in his endeavors and the locals just loved him. Ralph attributed his luck to the fact that he wore a fish on a string around his neck. He would hang the fish by its tail and then he would dance, with the hope of stirring up the spirits of the sea.
Ralph was truly loved by the people of Rosa Rita, Mexico because every time he strung that stinky dead fish around his neck he would get the greatest catch. After he and his beloved bird vanished in the 60’s, the people in that small village erected a statue in his honor. That statue is still there today. Ralph Marlin was the inspiration for the first fish shaped neckwear!
It All Started with Fish Shaped Ties
The idea to design the infamous necktie occurred in a sports bar on the west side of Milwaukee Wisconsin. The first one was designed on a cocktail napkin. This was the start of a company that would grow by leaps and bounds over the next 23 years.
The coach of the Milwaukee Bucks was the first person to wear this fish neckwear. He set a trend of wearing it at all the games. Many people showed an interest in purchasing their own ties and so Ralph Marlin began producing many different fish neckties.
The company still makes and sells their infamous fish accessories; however they have moved on to bigger and better things. It now produces a full line of neckwear and offers a specialty tie for just about everyone. They offer sports, music, art and occupational neckties. They also carry several licensed items such as NFL®, Harley Davidson®, Peanuts®, Family Guy®, and The Three Stooges®.
