The full length leather trench coat itself is not a new piece of clothing as men have wore them for hundreds of years.
During the First World War the officers of the British army wore cloth coats and complained that they were far too difficult to keep clean and they were incredibly heavy.
This was the advent of the full length leather trench coat. They were easier to keep clean and lighter weight than their fabric predecessor. In the early to mid 1900’s they became a man’s choice of wearing apparel as a matter of practicality. Not only was the garment much easier to keep clean, it made it easier for the man to go about his business because of its lighter weight.
This style of garment may have fallen into a slump as fashions came and went, but in the 1970’s, with the help of Hollywood, it again became the choice of wearing apparel for men.
Men wore the coat as a fashion statement because of its elegant lines and choice of colors. It came in colors ranging from the subdued elegant black to a bright purple and everything in between. The vintage coat came in a patchwork style, which means that it was made up of more than one piece of leather and in many different color combinations.
The full length leather trench coat has had its slump and resurgence and still lives on as the apparel for the man that wants to look handsome and impress. If you care for your coat faithfully it will keep you happy for many years.
